Bowties: I'm back in style, dammit!

Blue Morris wears a 1950s batwing-style bow tieFashionistas are saying that the young kids are sporting bow ties, though I have yet to see it myself.

Since I was young, I've always said that I was supposed to have been born 50 years before I was. I have always felt a connection to the music and the fashion of the 1940s and 1950s -- the suits, the hats, the ties -- and yes, even the bow ties.

I rarely desire to buy clothes of contemporary styles. In the 1980s when I was in high school, I refused to wear acid-wash jeans. Now that the 80s styles are back, I still refuse to wear acid-wash jeans. I mean no offense to anyone who does, they're just not for me. The same goes for neon. I think wearing a neon shirt would make me feel like a traffic cone.

Are Burlesque Dancers The Same As Strippers?

Further debate is happening on the potential threat to burlesque in the U.K. A popular TV show called "Loose Women" addressed the proposal that would require burlesque shows to apply for a sexual contact license, just as strip clubs do.

What is clear is that many people really have little idea what burlesque is today. How can an intelligent debate about this issue take place when there are so many misconceptions and confusion as to what burlesque is today? This is clearly evident in this video.

Reading up on hats the other day I learned that most men owned about 3 hats back in the day. They bought a new one about once a year. That hat, because it was in best condition, was the hat they wore out on the town. Last year's hat was a little worn so it would become the "everyday" hat. And the third hat which was the oldest would be used for fishing or working in the garage.

Once that third hat became worn beyond respectability, it might be appropriated by the young master of the house, who may have turned it into a whoopie cap.

A whoopie cap is what you see Jughead wearing in the Archie comics. They would cut the brim of a fedora style hat into a zig-zag shape and turn it upwards, which made it look something like a crown. It was popular to attach slogan buttons and decorative pins on them, which you can also see on Jughead's hat.

Shaboobie Boobarella photo by Ruxy AldeaA town in the UK called Camden is insisting that burlesque shows need a "sexual encounter entertainment licence" to stage shows -- the same license that is required by strip joints and lap dancers.

"Under the proposed Policing and Crime Bill, clubs hosting burlesque nights might have to apply for a sexual encounter entertainment licence or shut down.

"Burlesque dancers fear clubs may stop hosting them to avoid the stigma that comes with a sex licence. Performers are planning protests to defend their work, saying it is performance art, not sex."

A similar article also appears in Time Out London. The Camden Council believes that the residents of Camden are concerned about antisocial behaviour, fear of crime, and safety of female residents....
