There are loads of bandstands in parks across London, but most of them haven't been used much over the past years and they're starting to look tattered and lonely.
Some creative people have decided to bring these bandstands back to life and host live bands on a regular basis. They film the results and post them on the internet at www.bandstandbusking.com.
The three recordings of Hauschka are fantastic -- great music and entertaining to watch. It's a string quartet fronted by a toy piano with beautiful results.

The 21st Century Pinups blog has a good interview of Dita Von Teese just posted. The author, Holli-Mae, asks a lot of questions that mainstream media wouldn't think to ask. The interview was done in late 2008 but hasn't been posted until recently.
Speaking of how she became so famous Dita says "Listen, I was a girl working in rave clubs and a strip club in the early 90's, and in my mind, I was a just a girl having fun, enjoying an elaborate game of "dress up and put on a show."
When asked if she sees herself as being an ambassador of burlesque or as being responsible for the resurgence of burlesque, Dita responds: "I don't see myself as being "responsible" for it, because I wasn't the only one who was performing burlesque back before it was cool. Maybe some people give me credit for it, because I have had a lot of mainstream press in the past eight years...."

We look up to incredibly talented and successful people like the Beatles, Mozart, and Sinatra, and we assume there is such a thing as pure genius. Malcolm Gladwell begs to differ, as usual.
In Gladwell's latest book, "Outliers," he explores what it takes to become accomplished at your craft -- any craft from music to computer science.
In the early 1990s a psychologist named K. Anders Ericsson and two colleagues conducted an experiment at Berlin’s Academy of Music. Violinists at the school were divided into three groups: the stars, the good performers, and those who were unlikely to ever play professionally and would probably become music teachers. All the violinists were asked the same question: "Over the course of the years, ever since you picked up a violin, how many hours have you practiced?"

The website Good Girl Art has a nice selection of pulp fiction book covers with a burlesque and stripper theme.
"In Vintage Paperback art, most strippers are wholesome, innocent looking girls who are just having fun and showing off for a group of great young guys. The sleaze publishers showed a bit more of the hard edge but most of these never made it into the open racks on the news-stand."
The author of the website provides some interesting information about the original artists who painted the images for the book covers.
Some of the copy on these covers is shocking, but there is also some beautiful artwork. I especially like the cover of Strip Artist and how it shows the musician below the dancer.
If anyone knows where I could buy any of these books, please let me know. |
